Day Award Ceremony

Dr.Samlee Plianbangchang ,Regional Director ,WHO
South –East Asia, presenting the WHO
Director –General’s World No Tobacco Day Award, 2007 for leadership in
Global Tobacco Control to Hon’ble
Nimal Siripala de Silva ,Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition ,in
the presence of His Excellency, Mahinda Rajapksha,The President, Democratic
Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
The Regional Director of
WHO South-East Asia, Dr.Samlee Plianbangchang on 24th August 2007 presented
the WHO Director -General’s World No Tobacco Day Award, 2007 for leadership
in Global Tobacco Control to Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition, Hon'ble
Nimal Siripala de Silva in the presence of His Excellency, Mahinda
Rajapksha, The President of Sri Lanka.
Speaking at the award presentation ceremony Dr.Samlee Plianbangchang
said “receiving the Director –General’s World No Tobacco Day Award is a
befitting recognition of personal commitment, dedication, unrelenting
efforts and visionary leadership of Hon’ble Minister in advancing the
tobacco control agenda in Sri
Lanka.”

8th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and
the Pacific (8th ICAAP) - Colombo,
19-23 August 2007

|
8th ICAAP is the four day congress from 19th to
23rd, August 2007, at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference
Hall (BMICH), Colombo.
More than 3500 delegates from over 60 countries in Asia and the Pacific are
expected to come together in Colombo for 8th ICAAP and will be the biggest
ever conference to be held in Sri Lanka.
It will bring together politicians,
government officers, medical experts, academics, people living with
HIV/AIDS, community workers and the media to discuss a wide range of issues
with regard to this epidemic, that
is confronting this region.

Dengue
|
|
An increase in dengue cases has been
reported from certain areas, with latest data indicating that the average
increase in the city of Colombo
was 85 % compared with statistics from 2005, while there has been a 100%
increase in the month of April. The Public Health Department of the Colombo
Municipal Council has warned of a possible epidemic by June given the
increase in cases. Officials have connected this to the South West Monsoon
rains, which are expected at the end of May. Programs are being implemented
to mobilize staff of government institutions, organizations, private sector companies etc to inspect households and
private and public sector offices to eradicate breeding the ground of Aedes mosquitoes.

Avian Influenza

WHO is coordinating the global response to human cases of
H5N1 avian influenza and monitoring the corresponding threat of an
influenza pandemic. As of today, there are no reported avian flu cases in Sri Lanka
in either poultry or human beings.
