National Dengue Control Week: 24th – 29th April 2006

 

Media Seminar

A Media Seminar was held on the 20th April 2006 at the Health Education Bureau (HEB) to create awareness about the national programme for Dengue Week, the need to make the public aware of the consequences of dengue and the need to control it. Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition, Hon. Nimal Siripala De Silva was the Chief Guest on this occasion. Addressing the gathering of journalists, senior Ministry officials and WHO officials, the Minister noted the need for greater knowledge to be generated about the effects of dengue and approaches that can be instituted to prevent its spread. Special addresses were also made by the World Health Organization Representative to Sri Lanka, Dr. Agostino Borra, with HEB Actg. Director Dr. Kanthi Ariyaratne making the opening remarks. It was announced that an island wide campaign would be launched during Dengue Week, 24th – 29th April 2006 to inform the public and ensure the prevention of the breeding of the Aedes mosquitoes. The Technical Session which followed, dealt with the “Current Situation of Dengue in Sri Lanka” which was highlighted by Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe, Chief Epidemiologist, “COMBI for Dengue Prevention” explained by Dr. (Mrs.)Lakshmi De Silva National Coordinator of the National Dengue Control Programme and the “Possible Community Based Promotion Activities For Dengue Control” by Dr. Nirupa Pallewatte, Medical Officer / Senior Registrar HEB.
