The
Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition and the World Health Organization
jointly organized a consultation on 16th March 2006 at the Sri Lanka
Foundation Institute to examine the implementation aspects of the National
Medicinal Drug Policy (NMDP), which was developed last year.
The Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition, the Hon. Nimal Siripala De Silva and WHO
Representative to Sri Lanka, Dr. Agostino Borra were among the participants in addition to the
representatives from MOH, WHO, universities, patient groups, medical and
pharmacy profession, pharmaceutical industry and trade.
At this meeting, a steering committee was appointed with
representations from all stakeholders and WHO to move forward the NMDP, which
would be implemented in accordance with the following objectives.
1. to
ensure the availability and affordability of efficacious, safe and good
quality medicines relevant to the health care needs of the people in a
sustainable and equitable manner ;
2. to
promote the rational use of medicines by healthcare professionals and
consumers ; and
3. to promote local manufacture of Essential Medicines.
The mode of operation of the National Medicinal Drug
Policy will be within the overall health policy of the country, based
on the Essential Medicines Concept, and will be focused on the health sector
but include/coordinate with relevant areas such as education, finance,
agriculture, animal husbandry, pharmaceutical industry and trade
